Vic; Gas marks and wreaths on day of mourning for workplace dead
Workers in gas masks laid wreaths and feigned death during an International Day of
Mourning ceremony held in Melbourne today.
This year's ceremony focused on work-related cancers and has prompted calls to the
federal government to ban the production and importation of asbestos products.
ACTU national secretary GREG COMBET says Australia still imports an estimated 1500
tonnes of raw asbestos and around one million products containing asbestos every year.
Mr COMBET is calling on the federal government to come on board with all the Labor
states and agree to ban asbestos imports and the use of asbestos in Australia as soon
as possible.
The International Day of Mourning is officially marked around the world on April 28.
